Purpose of Module
 
  • To provide an overview and practical introduction to the research techniques and methods applicable to the development of a Masters level dissertation.
  • To develop a portfolio to demonstrate practical skills in the use of those research techniques and methods. The portfolio will describe preparation for the project to be conducted during the summer term.
Learning Objectives
 
  • To equip students with an understanding of the techniques and methodologies required for Masters level research
  • To provide a framework for project specification and rationale, background research, project planning, experimental design, project implementation and evaluation
  • To support the development of academic authoring and technical skills in project specification, planning and research, at a level appropriate for a Masters dissertation
  • To develop ethical and professional standards for conducting research

NB For each lecture there are the Powerpoint slides as presented in the lecture, MP3 files and a transcription of the lecture as a pdf file. The MP3 audio files are intended for use in conjunction with the associated PowerPoint slides - either an animated presentation on a PC or with paper print outs.

The mp3 files are from the 2006 lecture and accompany the 2006 ppt slides. The most pertinent and up-to-date information is provided in the 2007 ppt slides - you should study these also and not rely exclusively on the 2006 ppt slides.
