The Department is Computing and Electrical Engineering is active in a number of areas of research and has a strong research culture. Funding Research

All Postgraduate students need to meet the cost of tuition fees and living expenses for the duration of their course. The levels of the fees are given below as well as details about scholarships which are available to cover these costs.

Tuition Fees

In 2000-2001 Heriot-Watt University will charge the following tuition fees in pounds sterling per year for study for an MPhil or PhD.

EPSRC Funding for UK and EU Nationals
For students from the UK EPSRC studentships will cover the tuition fees and provide a maintenance allowance of £6620 per year (figure given for entry Oct 1999).
For students from EU countries, EPSRC studentships will normally only cover tuition fees but for exceptional students other funding should be available though university scholarships or departmental assistance.
The Department has 2 EPSRC studentships available for Entry in October 2000.
British Council Funding for Overseas students to study in the UK (and for UK students to study Overseas)
Overseas Research Student (ORS) Awards These cover the difference in fees between the Overseas tuition fees and the home fees
The university also has a scholarship scheme which will provide the remainder of the fees and a maintenance allowance to all applicants who are successful in obtaining ORS support
Note that closing date for applications is April for applying for awards to start in October of same year
Association of Commonwealth Universities Awards for Students from Commonwealth Countries (and USA)
University Scholarship Heriot-Watt has a scholarship scheme providing three different levels of support, ranging from paying fees only (at home student level), to providing different levels of maintenance in addition.
Institute of Electrical Engineers (IEE) Awards for students with educational qualifications which qualify them for IEE Membership.
Carnegie Trust for Universities of Scotland Awards for students with a 1st class honours degree from a Scottish University

This table only lists some of the common sources of funding. There are others available. It should be noted that sites such as the British Council, provide search-able lists of funding, relating to individual countries.

Processing Applications

Before making offers the Admissions Officer will contact both referees seeking references. Delay in receiving these references from referees is the most common reason for delay or a halt to processing an application.
