Introduction

I am a graduate in Mechanical Engineering and I joined the Surface, Micro-engineering and Diagnostics Group, Heriot-Watt University as a PhD research student in August 2004 and working under the supervision of Prof. R. L. Reuben, Dr. Rehan Ahmed and Dr. John A. Steel, and. Apart from my PhD research, I also work on some contract and industrial consultancy projects related to Materials Engineering. I am also working as Approved Tutor in Dept. of Mechanical Engineering, Heriot-Watt University since Oct 2004.

After my first degree (B.Sc. Engineering-Mechanical) from Magadh University, India in 2001, I worked for two years (2001-2003) as a Junior Research Fellow at Surface Engineering Division, International Advanced Research Centre for Powder Metallurgy and New Materials (ARCI), Hyderabad, India.

Current Research Interests

Since August 2004, I am working towards my interdisciplinary PhD thesis titled ‘Acoustic Emission (AE) Analysis to Study the Vickers Indentation Behaviour of Thermally Sprayed Cermet Coatings’. The research activities comprise the following areas:

·          Study of tribo-mechanical behaviour of thermal spray ceramic coatings (HVOF/Plasma Spray: Conventional and Nano-structured coatings) using AE sensors during Vickers indentation testing

·          On-line AE monitoring during thermal spraying processes for coatings quality monitoring

·          Non-Destructive Testing (NDT) using AE sensors during mechanical testing procedures

These studies are to develop a new technique to monitor quality and quantify strengths / porosity / fracture toughness of thermal spray ceramic coatings, all using on-line structural data of AE (signal processing of time and frequency domain, and its derivatives; MATLAB/LabVIEW). In addition, it also includes application of various tools for complex metallurgical characterization, fracture and its AE mapping of sprayed ceramic coatings during Vickers indentation testing, development of experimental and mathematical modelling, etc.

My previous research at ARCI, India was based largely on Electro-Spark Coatings (ESC) for enhanced performance of high-speed steel (HSS) cutting tools. Coating & characterization of ESC & comparing with Bare & Physical Vapour Deposition (PVD) coated drill bits using CNC machine (on-line Force/Torque measurement), Statistical Taguchi’s Design of Experiments; it also included ASTM Tribological studies (Sliding, Abrasive & Erosion wear modes) of the coatings.
