SELEX Galileo Scientific Photography Competition

Organized by School of Engineering and Physical Sciences

 

We are searching for the original images which can reveal the advances of our research, teaching and study in the Heriot-Watt University, which may be beautiful, fascinating, intriguing, amusing, or possibly all of these things. This year's technical photography competition, open to all staff and students in university, is sponsored by the School of EPS and company of SELEX Galileo.

 

Depending on how many entries, there will be three categories:

(1) Scientific photos and images;

(2) Simulations and cartoon illustrations;

(3) any other photos reflecting people in teaching and research environments.

 

For each category, there will be:

 

·  1st prize: Gift of £300 with certificate

·  2nd prize: Gift of £150 with certificate

·  3rd prize: Gift of £50 with certificate

·  Runner up prizes: a variety of small gifts

 

The photographs will be featured on the Department's or University website, newsletter, local newspaper, plasma screen, posters and more.

Competition Rules

 

1.     The photograph or image could be (1) microscopic features, (2) laboratory work, (3) project work and team, (4) computer simulation, (5) production line, (6) lecture or teaching, (7) engineers out in the field etc. There is no limit to the number of photographs that you may enter. If you are not certain whether your photograph will win or you are trying to choose between several possible entries, then please just enter them all and let the judges decide. All entries must be supplied in digital format - and must be submitted in high resolution quality.

2.     All university academic and supporting staff, research associates, postgraduate and undergraduate students (especially fourth year project students) are eligible to enter. The work should be performed in our university or mostly done by the entrant working in our university but with collaboration work in other place within the past two years. 

3.     The deadline is 1st March 2010.

4.     The photograph must be submitted by email to: photocompetition@hw.ac.uk. The entrant must provide:

o   Title

o   Caption of the context (less than 50 words describing the science, impact and importance of the photograph)

o   Whether the photograph is an original photo, a composite of several images or a manipulated image ( eg. Photoshop used to enhance image).

o   Any acknowledgements

5.     The copyright of the entire image before and after manipulation must be held by the entrant or the entrant must have written authority of the copyright owner to submit the photograph for the competition. It is the responsibility of the entrant to seek all permissions required for the image to win under the entrant's name, and for the display and publication of the entry. The judges reserve the right to request evidence of such authorities or consents. The entrant must include the following statement in the text in the email:

 

I have confirmed, or checked with my supervisor/DoS (for all RA/students) __________________ that I have permission to enter the attached photograph(s) in the competition and give the School of EPS the right to publish the photograph(s) on its website and elsewhere.

 

5.  Any image that has won a prize in another competition is not eligible. If an image has won a prize in such a competition it will be disqualified. 

6. The organizer will choose the judges, who will decide the winners. The organizer reserves the rights to declare void any unqualified entry and the decisions shall be unchallengeable.

7. The organisers reserve the rights for using the photos for the exhibition of some or all, in whole or part, in all media. The organisers are not infringing any copyright of the photos.
